We rented a SOT and enjoyed some time on Okanagan Lake.

I spend my free time kayaking on Okanagan Lake in British Columbia. In this picture my youngest son.

I would put in near Vernon as that is where my friends live and they would be coming with me, I would like to think. Cheers Greg

Paddling at 10mph??

I was reading in my Canoe&Kayak magazine and it had an article in the mag of a woman that paddles she averages 10mph (16.09kmh) on a 500meter sprint.
(referring to Page 31 August/2008 issue Canoe&Kayak magazine)

Now I don't know about you guys but I have been able to paddle my Tandem at about 7kmh (4.34MPH) average cruising speed without a wind and peak out at 8kmh (4.97MPH) when I really push myself. Am I in that bad of shape?

Does that 10mph seem right? if it does then I am paddling a bit slow and I am thinking I need to work out at the gym this winter.

Guy the speed would be about right and you need to remember that she is a professional athlete that trains for a specific distance more hours a week than most folks work. Your SOT is a beamy and shorter boat and has a slower hull speed compared to the racing kayak. She would also be paddling with her feet by this I mean that you can increase your speed by pushing on your foot pegs. You can be sure that her forward stoke is a work of art compared to ours. The forward stroke is the most important stroke in kayaking and very few folks give it the attention it deserves. Would she be able to do this hour after hour of course not, she is a sprint racer and that is quite a talent in itself. Go to the gym anyway can't hurt. Cheers greg

10mph is pretty impressive speed for sure. My SOT i can get it up to 6kmh but the sit-inside tandem 7-8kmh top-speed on a flat. But when I am touring around don't really need the speed. The gym would sure help for sure I think when I have to fight a wind ;-)

They need one of those kayak work out machines in the gym. I think I will have a look around in town and see if any of the gyms have one.

Have a good one!

Guy there is a book out there on kayaking for fitness you could probably find it on www.paddling.net. This is a very good resource for paddlers and they have some pretty intersting tips etc. Check it out sign up and enter the daily draws and win a new boat. Cheers, Greg
